STYLE CHALLENGE SERIES: WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST WARDROBE AND STYLE CHALLENGES? Pt. 2

Welcome back to our Style Challenges Series! Last week we spoke about a number one challenge amongst my own clients and that was FIT FRUSTRATIONS.

It is always helpful when a client chooses my Closet Consultation and Audit. It is when we are both standing in the ‘belly of the beast’ of the closet that clarity comes, and where any hidden problems come to full sight. Not only do we finger through closet racks, assess and sometimes discard of some pieces, but time is spent trying on her already owned items. It is here revelations are made and the reality of letting go becomes real. Simply put, it’s hard to style something that doesn’t fit.

FIT FRUSTRATIONS

Have you ever had big plans for a couch, until you realize it doesn’t fit in the earmarked space? Do you immediately knock out a wall, or just replace the couch? Ladies (and my gents), just replace the couch!

 I often tell my clients “Pay no attention to the tag right now. What about this item genuinely doesn’t look or feel ‘right’ ?” Looking more closely at details allows us to see that we’re uncomfortable with;

  • having to constantly wiggle our bra bands back in place

  • push a loose sleeve up every time

  • pull a belt too tightly (causing folds and odd ripples)

  • Some of us can get downright grumpy if we have to suck in our stomachs all day to keep a pair of jeans buttoned

Wouldn't a combination of all these adjustments build up annoyances and unnecessary stress? Very likely so! There is a combination of ‘Fit Points’ to be conscious of when trying a garment that should accurately sway us to either buying or leaving; keeping or finding a new home. At this point in the style journey, we make note of sizing and consider the option to size down or up in similar items.

But what about the pieces that generally fit the frame, but the complications lie in more intricate details? Knowing your body measurements, body type and understanding the specifics of your body are crucial in making more successful purchases. I encourage you to keep a little note handy for all your online or in store shopping.

to Know Thyself is the beginning of wisdom - socrates

  • Your overall body type (if you know it)

  • Height (if you know it…just kidding)

  • Full leg length and inseam length

  • Arm length

  • Shoulder width

  • Waist size

  • Hip size

  • Torso length

  • Chest measurement (and bra size)

Over time you may even have this memorized, but I assure you that taking the time to know YOUR body and its beautiful details can help you choose more wisely AND confidently.

I am not naive in thinking that knowledge gives us the power to never have fit issues again, but it is certainly step one. If you haven’t yet discovered the world of Alterations, I promise you it’s worth it! Many loved and favorite pieces have been ‘saved’ from the to-go pile when we’ve ‘nipped and tucked’ in areas for better fit. A quick Google or social media search can put you in touch with alterations specialists who can bring the life and joy back into castaway, yet favorite pieces. I have personally used and referred my clients to the Alterations Department at Nordstrom. There may be benefits associated with purchases made at Nordstrom or if you are a card holder, but you ARE able to also take in ‘outside’ pieces for alterations at whatever price is determined by that specialist. If your wheels are turning as you think about all the ‘annoying’ clothing items you never wear because something isn’t quite right, I encourage you to make an appointment with your nearest tailor, seamstress or alterations specialist and wear the *darn* thing! Happy Closet Shopping!
